Sincerity(?)

Sincerity is a difficult word to define...

Looking up some dictionaries, I found so many different definitions...

"the quality of being open and truthful",

"being open and genuine, not deceitful",

"the quality or condition of being sincere”,

“freedom from duplicity",  

“the quality or state of being sincere”,

“honesty of mind”,

“freedom from hypocrisy in one’s heart of heart…

That last one made sence!

…freedom from hypocrisy in one’s heart of heart…

Skakespear used these words in Hamlet… 

“Give me that man

That is not passion’s slave, and I will wear him

In my heart’s core—aye, in my heart of heart,

As I do thee.”

(Hamlet Act 3, scene 2, 71–74)

In one’s heart of hearts -  meaning - in the innermost recesses of one’s heart, in one’s most private and pure thoughts & feelings.

Today this expression is used to assure the veracity or sincerity of any statement of belief. But is sincerity the road we need to travel for a better way of life? And are people ready to listen to the truth?

I used to live in Devonport House during my first year in London, it was a beautiful place and I fell in love with it the first time I saw it...It was located right outside the entrance of Greenwich park where we used to go barefoot...

When I arrived to Devonport House the artist that decorated the courtyard had placed a big  sculpture presenting a big metal Question Mark, maybe to remind us of all the questions in our heads…

3 years later, another artist, French this time, François Hameury, installed right at the same spot, “The Throne of Earthly Kings”, a major piece of public sculpture, it was a big metal futuristic throne…

When I first saw it, I admit missing the old Question Mark…

And then I got a little closer…and saw that small sign..

May all who sit here have the courage

to be true to themselves.

The world is a kingdom

for those who search inside.

Since then I honor the Question Mark…as a way of trying to be true to myself…
